On Wednesday, the men’s soccer team defeated Heartland Community College by the score of 4-2. The game started with Lincoln College’s Pierson Felming catching a cross and throwing to Adrian Roman at midfield who beat two players and crossed the ball to a wide open Shevon Stewart who calmly slotted the ball home to put the Lynx up 1-0.
Just minutes later, the Lynx scored another goal. Jose Castillo dribbled past two players and finished the ball in the back of the net after the goalie didn’t make a clean save on his first shot. Heartland earned a PK call and converted that shot to make the score 2-1.
The Lynx’s Cameron Hughes responded to Heartland’s goal with his first collegiate goal. His goal came on a free kick assisted by Angel Vargas. Jose Castillo followed up for the Lynx with the fourth goal in the first half. Castillo received a great pass from his brother to be one on one with the Heartland keeper. Heartland would get a late goal in the second half to make it 4-2.
Coach Massena commented after the game. “We started off great but didn’t finish the game the way we wanted. We dropped off the second half and couldn’t find the back of the net. Despite the bad second half the great first half was enough to win us the game.”
The Lynx now have a 4-2 record in region play and should place in 3rd or 4th place for the tournament. The Lynx will receive home field advantage in the tournament and will be hosting a playoff game on Saturday, October 22nd at home against Heartland Community College or South Western Illinois College.
The Lynx return to play at home on Saturday, October 15 at Noon against Jefferson College. A pre-game tailgate is planned and the community is invited to attend.
