On Saturday, the men’s soccer team continued its winning ways with a 2-0 victory over two-time Region 24 champions Lewis & Clark Community College. Lewis & Clark recently won the Region tournament in 2014 and 2015. The Lynx held home field with the weekend win and a current two-game winning streak.
The two teams battled in the first half with no team able to find the back of the net. The Trailblazers controlled the ball for the first 25 minutes of play but couldn’t get a good look at goal. Late in the first half, Lincoln found their way past the high pressure defense and blasted one of the post. Later in the half, another Lynx scoring opportunity was turned away by the tough Trailblazer defenders.
Second half adjustments by head coach Ben Massena and his team gave the Lynx more possessions and several key chances at goal. At the 12 minute mark, Lincoln’s Shevon Stewart (Kingston, Jamaica) dribbled past the defender and found a wide open Petor Kromah (Springfield, IL) who right-footed a laser past the Trailblazer goaltender giving Lincoln a 1-0 lead. Lincoln would not be done and added another goal with 23 minutes left to play. Adrian Roman (Waukegan, IL) took possession and maneuvered past several Lewis & Clark defenders before crossing the ball to teammate Cristian Castillo (Moline, IL) who beat the last defender and slotted it home.
Massena commented, “We sat back after we scored the first goal and counterattacked and made sure we had numbers behind the ball and the boys defended well against a very strong team. It’s always a big game against Lewis & Clark and I’m happy that our guys stepped up and found a way to not only win, but to keep a clean sheet.”
The win ups the Lynx overall record to 3-2 on the season and undefeated in Region 24 play at 2-0. Lincoln will host Heartland Community College on Tuesday, September 20 at 4:00pm and will again be at home on Thursday, September 22 at 3:00pm against Central Methodist University.
